Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes is one of my favorite comfort foods. I know this is another hamburger recipe. However, with the price of meat these days it makes for an economical meal.

A Little History About Sloppy Joes

Yes, Sloppy Joes is one of our favorite comfort food recipes. We love to do this when we are watching a ballgame, movie night, or when we just want something simple. Do you know how Sloppy Joes got its name? After all, no one really does. Nevertheless, before it got its name Sloppy Joe’s it was called loose meat. Simply shredded beef on a bun. Some people say it got its name in Sioux City Iowa. Whereas a cook named Joe added tomato sauce to the mix. Others claim it originated in Key West at “Sloppy Joes Bar”. And finally, they claim it was born in Cuba at Sloppy Joes Saloon.

Well, no matter where it originated you will hardly ever find two recipes alike. I know, I looked at over thirty recipes. This is one of those recipes that I have modified over the years. Taking what I think are the best ingredients and adding some of my own. At any rate, If you like Sloppy Joes I am sure you will love this recipe.

Ok, so let’s get started by assembling all the ingredients:

/sloppy Joe's is a great economical meal for any occasion
  • 1 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 Tsp. olive oil
  • 1 Lb. ground beef
  • Medium-sized onion-more or less
  • 3 or 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 4oz. can tomato paste
  • 2/3 cup ketchup
  • 1/3 cup of water. Use 2/3 cup of water if you will be simmering it on the stove for a while
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 Tsp. yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp. chili powder
  • 1 Tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 Tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. Bad Byron’s butt rub. You didn’t think I would leave that out, did you?

Instructions:

  1. Heat the butter and oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef and brown. Break the beef apart as you cook it to get a fine mixture. Takes about 10 minutes. Now transfer it to a colander and let it drain.
  2. Add the onion and let it cook for a few minutes until it is caramelized. Add the garlic and cook for another minute to infuse the fragrance. Ah! garlic. Return the beef to the skillet together with the tomato paste and water. However, you can add the other 1/3 cup water at the end if needed.
  3. Now, stir in the ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, salt, and Worcestershire sauce. Moreover, Don’t add in the butt rub yet. Mix it well, turning the heat to medium for about 10″. Here is where you will add the extra water if you think your mixture is a little too dry. Personal preference.
  4. Now add in the butt rub. Furthermore, This is what gives the Sloppy Joe’ that unique flavor. Don’t believe me? Taste it before and after you add the rub.
  5. Serve with your favorite buns.

In conclusion, I always double the recipe and freeze the leftovers. Then, I thaw it out the night before in the fridge. As a result, it makes a great lunch.
